Autumn in the Dolomites
19-26 October
(7 days, 6 nights. 7 spaces max)
Located in northern Italy are the Dolomites - widely regarded as the most photogenic mountains in all of the Alps. Like jagged teeth, the steep towers, pinnacles, jagged ridges & impossibly sharp spires look down on picturesque villages & alpine meadows. This is photographic heaven, and the tour is timed to coincide with the mountains at their colourful best. The slopes are covered with larch trees which burn like gold before dropping their pines in the winter. We will start our trip in the Val Gardena staying in the lovely Hartmann Hotel in the village itself. This will allow us to take the cable car up to the highest alpine meadow in the Alps, the Seiser Alm with its beautiful wooden huts set against the teeth of the Sassolungo peaks. We will also go up the Geisler Alm (again by cable car) to photograph the spectacular ridgelline. This area is also famed for the onion domed tiny churches, Santa Maddalena & San Giovanni which we will photograph as the evening light catches the mountains behind. Then we will switch location to Lake Misurina, near Cortina, which will give us access to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo & the Locatelli plateau. This is classic Dolomites - the peaks stretch to 2999m and the plateau is rocky & barren, but wonderfully photogenic. We will also photograph the lakes in the area capturing the wonderful reflections of the high mountains. Finally we will return to Venice airport for the flight home (unless you fancy extending your stay in La Serenissima, the most beautiful city in the world...)
